What

Aanungal Illatha Penungal is adapted from the Iranian novella Zanan Bedun Mardan (Women Without Men) by Shahrnush Parsipur.

Set against the background of political turmoil in the country in 1953, five women with varied experiences in life meet at a garden in the town of Karaj owned by one of them. The garden at Karaj – a much cooler, greener place than the hot capital city- works as a metaphor where women find space to be themselves, away from the heat and rage of patriarchy for a short while, time enough for each one of them to find their own way.

This second production of Nireeksha Repertory is a landmark in Malayalam theatre for its unique design and bringing to stage five women-a rarity in Malayalam theatre. Aanungal Illatha Penungal also brought the best director award to Sudhi in the Amateur Drama Competition conducted by Kerala Sangeetha Nataka Akademi the only woman to have received that honor till date.
